As of January 1, 2025, the EPA has mandated that all new air conditioning equipment must use R-454B refrigerant. This change marks another major step toward more environmentally friendly cooling systems—and it could affect availability of parts, refrigerant, and service for older systems.

What Is R-454B and Why Does It Matter?

For years, homeowners relied on R-22 refrigerant, which was later phased out due to its harmful impact on the ozone layer. It was replaced by R-410A, a refrigerant with no ozone-depleting potential but still a relatively high Global Warming Potential (GWP).

Now, R-410A is also being phased out, and R-454B is the new industry standard. Here’s why this matters:

• Significantly lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than R-410A—about 78% less!

• No ozone-depleting compounds

• Low toxicity

• Proven energy efficiency, based on U.S. Department of Energy testing

Should I Repair or Replace My AC System?

If your system is more than 10 years old or you’re dealing with regular refrigerant refills and poor cooling performance, this might be the right time to replace it.

Repair may be the right choice if:

• Your system is under 10 years old

• You’ve had fewer than 2 repairs in the last 3 years

• It worked well last cooling season

• Refrigerant and parts are still available

Replacement might make more sense if:

• Your system is older than 10 years

• You’re using an outdated refrigerant like R-22 or R-410A

• Cooling performance has declined

• You’re refilling refrigerant annually

Upgrading to a new system that uses R-454B ensures you’re future-proofed and more energy efficient.
